The look of red riding is very dark. Britain is represented as an empty void, and shown to be depressing. The weather is bleak, and shows Britain in a atmospheric light. for example most of the time it is raining in britain in red riding and this show that it is a dark and depressing atmosphere. Detailed reference to a scene when the main detective gets beaten up in the car park by police. this shows corruption in the police force.
Red riding has a set design that makes it look like it was film during the period that it is from to make this as real as possible there are costumes that would of been worn in 1974.

The north & south are shown to be very separate. Thatcher-ism is represented in Red Riding, as all of the characters are very much out for themselves, rather than the care for the community or welfare of others. There's a lot of individualism between the characters.
There are a lot of terraced houses representing working class Britain. The landscape is very industrial, it seems like a failed industrial town, and unemployed.

When the guy goes to talk to the other guy that might have killed the small girl, the environment that they live in is very run down and dilapidated. The guy that is meant to have killed the girls is also simple minded. This is why he's been suspected for killing the young girl.
